Pronouns and possessives
Rule
Pronouns (местоимения) заменяют существительные, чтобы не повторять их.
• I, you, he, she, it, we, they — subject pronouns (подлежащие).
• me, you, him, her, it, us, them — object pronouns (дополнения).
Possessive adjectives показывают принадлежность:
• my, your, his, her, its, our, their + существительное.
Example: My book is on the table.
Possessive pronouns заменяют фразу с принадлежностью:
• mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs.
Example: This book is mine.
We use subject and object pronouns to avoid repetition.
• John is tall. He is a student.
• I see John. I see him.
Possessive adjectives go before nouns: my car, your house, their school.
Possessive pronouns stand alone: mine, yours, hers, ours, theirs.
Be careful:
• Its (без апострофа) — принадлежность.
• It’s = It is.
Pronouns and possessives help make speech natural and cohesive.
• Reflexive pronouns: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves — show that the subject and object are the same.
Example: He taught himself French.
• Possessive adjectives modify nouns; possessive pronouns replace them.
This is my idea → This idea is mine.
• Avoid double possession: a friend of mine (not my friend’s of).
